Service conditions and materials suitable for butterfly valves

Butterfly valves come in many types, including quick-closing and continuously adjustable ones. They are mainly used in low-pressure, large-diameter pipelines for liquids and gases. Suitable for occasions where pressure loss requirements are not high, flow regulation is needed, and quick opening and closing are required; usually for temperatures below 300℃ and pressures below 40 kg (Butterfly valves generally don't use very high pressure; domestically, very few reach CL600), and the medium is generally water and gas, with low requirements for the medium; particulate media can also be used.

As a sealed butterfly valve, its rapid development only came after the advent of synthetic rubber, making it a new type of shut-off valve. In China, until the 1980s, butterfly valves were mainly used as low-pressure valves, with valve seats made of synthetic rubber. In the 1990s, due to increased exchanges with foreign countries, hard-sealed (metal-sealed) butterfly valves rapidly developed. Currently, many valve factories can stably produce medium-pressure metal-sealed butterfly valves, expanding the application areas of butterfly valves.

Butterfly valves can transport and control media such as water, condensate, circulating water, wastewater, seawater, air, gas, LNG, dry powder, slurry, fruit pulp, and mixtures with suspended solids.

Butterfly valves are suitable for flow regulation. Since butterfly valves have relatively large pressure losses in pipelines, approximately three times that of gate valves, when selecting butterfly valves, the impact of pressure loss on the pipeline system should be fully considered, as well as the structural strength of the butterfly plate to withstand the pipeline medium pressure during closure. In addition, the limitation of the working temperature of the elastic valve seat material at high temperatures must be considered. Butterfly valves have a small structural length and overall height, fast opening and closing speeds, and good fluid control characteristics. The structural principle of butterfly valves is ideal for manufacturing large-diameter valves. When butterfly valves are required to control flow, it is crucial to correctly select the size and type of butterfly valve to ensure proper and effective operation.
